Two programs by age

Junior Competitor Program (JCP)

  • Age: 5–12 years
  • Belt: at least a yellow belt. Black belts can join too.
  • Extra training: 1 or 2 times a week, 1.5 hours each
  • Belt tests: the same requirements as in the Junior Black Belt Program

Senior Competitor Program (SCP)

  • Age: 13 years and older, adults included
  • Belt: at least a yellow belt. Black belts can join too.
  • Extra training: 1 or 2 times a week, 1.5 hours each
  • Belt tests: the same requirements as in the Senior Black Belt Program

Groups are formed by age. When you turn 13, you move from JCP to SCP in the same way as in the Black Belt programs. Competitors from Beom, Sasaja and Stadin TKD can also train together.

What you get

  • Coaching for competing. The extra sessions focus on what you need at competitions. Competitor 1 means about 66 hours of coaching a year and Competitor 2 about 132 hours.
  • An instructor with you at domestic competitions. There are eight competitions a year in Finland. The club’s instructor attends, and the instructor’s costs are included in the annual fee.
  • The chance to compete abroad. At least two international competitions are offered each year.
  • Hours for your training card. A competition counts as 5 hours and a camp as 4 hours for each training day. These hours count towards the minimum times for belt tests, so competition days move you forward on your belt path too.

Prices

Competitor 1

€600 / year

Extra sessions per week: 1

Competitor 2

€950 / year

Extra sessions per week: 2

Competitor is paid on top of the fee for the Black Belt program or the Leisure Program. The price includes the extra sessions and the instructor’s costs at domestic competitions.

Billing and commitment

The season is the calendar year, and billing takes place in January. You commit to the program for two years. The second year is billed even if you stop partway through.

By committing to the program, you promise to take part in all domestic competitions and to enter the international competitions.

Joining during the year

You can join during the year. If you pay for the rest of the year and the following year at once, you receive a refund of 5% of the annual price for each month that has already passed. The month you join is not counted. For example, someone who joins in July pays €1,020 for Competitor 1 or €1,615 for Competitor 2. The two-year commitment is then covered in one go. If you pay only for the current year, you pay the full annual price for it.

Join in November or December and you pay only for the following year. The rest of the year’s training is included in the price.

What is paid separately

  • Competition entry fees. Each competition has its own event in myClub, and the fee is billed when you register for the competition.
  • International competitions. The coach’s costs are shared among those who travel. Each person also pays for their own travel, accommodation and entry fee.
  • Licence. The ITF Taekwon-Do licence costs €38 a year and must be purchased at the beginning of the year. The licence does not include insurance, but you can buy it at the same time.

Safety first

Competition coaching means training seriously, but safely.

  • Protective gear is mandatory from the start, even before the blue belt.
  • Contact depends on age:
    • 6 years and younger: no contact
    • 7–12 years: light body contact
    • 13 years and older: body contact and light head contact, with protective gear only
  • Breaking: those under 18 always break onto a focus pad or a held strike pad.

You buy your own equipment. We recommend the shop fightway.shop, which sells ITF uniforms and protective gear. The clubs’ own shops are at itf.fi/beom-kauppa and itf.fi/sasaja-kauppa.

Belt tests

Competitor does not change your belt path. Belt tests have the same requirements as in the Black Belt programs:

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be in a Black Belt program?

No. You can take Competitor in addition to a Black Belt program or the Leisure Program.

Is a yellow belt enough?

Yes. A yellow belt is the lowest rank that can join the program. Black belts can join too.

Which level should I choose?

Competitor 1 has one extra session a week and Competitor 2 has two. If you are not sure, start with Competitor 1. You can switch to Competitor 2 during the year. You then pay the difference (€350), minus €17.50 for each month that has passed.

Is there a sibling discount?

No. Each competitor pays the price of their own level.

Can an adult take part?

Yes. Senior Competitor Program is for everyone aged 13 and over, adults included.

What do domestic competitions cost?

The instructor’s costs are included in the annual fee. The competition entry fee is billed in myClub when you register. In Finland it is typically €35–45.
